The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
